The Valère and Tourbillon castles stand on two hills above the old town; Tourbillon is closed in winter. On Fridays there is a market in the old town.
Vineyards run between Sion and Sierre. Valais wines include Fendant, Petite Arvine and Cornalin; the grape harvest is in September and October.
